TEN CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
By: BILLY H. NEWMAN, M.B.A.
LEADERSHIP IN THE AGE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY REQUIRES DECISION MAKING AT UNPRECEDENTED SPEED. A STUDY OF TRAITS AND CHARACTERISTICS FROM WORLD CLASS ORGANIZATIONS SUMMARIZES THE PHILOSOPHY NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS IN THIS FAST-PACED, AND EVER- CHANGING ENVIRONMENT. PLANNING FOLLOWED BY IMPLEMENTATION OF THESE BASIC PRINCIPLES SHOULD PROVIDE MANAGERS WITH OPPORTUNITIES FOR ORGANIZATIONAL GROWTH.
1) LEAD FROM THE FRONT
WHEN THE BULLETS START TO FLY, DON’T GALLOP TO THE REAR WHILE YELLING “ CHARGE!” GREAT LEADERS ARE GREAT TEACHERS.
2) HAVE A STRATEGIC PLAN WITH CONTINGENCIES
CREATE A PHILOSOPHY, CORE VALUES, MISSION, AND PERIODIC REVIEW. PROVIDE EVERYONE IN THE ORGANIZATION THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE INPUT. IF THINGS GO SOUTH, CONTINGENCY PLANNING IS ESSENTIAL.
3) PROGRESSIVE LEADERSHIP
GREAT LEADERS ARE NOT ONLY GREAT TEACHERS, BUT ARE GREAT LEARNERS AS WELL. CREATE A LEARNING ORGANIZATION. MANAGE CHANGE EFFECTIVELY. DEVELOP “ENERGY” WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION-CREATE A SENSE OF URGENCY. MAKE THE TOUGH DECISIONS. DELEGATE WITH AUTHORITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY. AND, KNOW WHEN IT IS TIME TO MOVE OVER.
4) HIRE THE BEST PEOPLE YOU CAN FIND
THEN ALLOW THEM TO DO THE JOB. ORGANIZATIONS NEED PROBLEM SOLVERS, NOT PROBLEM CREATORS. ENCOURAGE RISK TAKERS AND CELEBRATE SUCCESSES!
5) DEVELOP MINIMAL ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES
NECESSARY TO COMPLY WITH REGULATIONS AND RECORD KEEPING.
INSTITUTE INFORMED DECISION MAKING AT THE LOWEST POSSIBLE LEVELS TO ENCOURAGE SPEED. UTILIZE THE KISS PRINCIPLE-KEEP IT SUPER SIMPLE! EMPOWER RATHER THAN ENCUMBER!
6) OPEN, HONEST COMMUNICATION
KEEP PERSONNEL RECORDS AND PROPRIETARY INFORMATION PRIVATE. EVERYTHING ELSE IS ON THE TABLE INTERNALLY.
7) PROVIDE FOR EMPLOYEE NEEDS
EDUCATIONAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, FINANCIAL, PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND EMOTIONAL. EMPLOYEES ARE BETTER ABLE TO PERFORM JOBS WHEN THEY FEEL GOOD, PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY.
8) DEVELOP INSTITUTIONAL LEGACY
HISTORICAL EVENTS AND EXPLOITS ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION ON WHICH TO BUILD. UTILIZE MENTORS TO BRING NEW EMPLOYEES INTO THE FOLD. CREATES A STRONG DESIRE TO SUCCEED AND GROW WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION.
9) ENCOURAGE INTERACTION
INTER OR INTRANET COMMUNICATION SHOULD BE TEMPERED WITH PERSONAL INTERACTION. ESTABLISH CONTROLLED ACTIVITIES TO PHYSICALLY MEET REGARDLESS OF MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE. HAVE FUN WITH ONE ANOTHER!
10) CONTINUALLY REDEFINE
THE “WE HAVE ARRIVED” ATTITUDE WILL BE THE FIRST NAIL IN THE ORGANIZATIONAL COFFIN. ONE ORGANIZATIONAL THEORY HOLDS THAT FROM THE TIME AN ORGANIZATION IS BORN, IT BEGINS TO DIE!
